Membership Meeting: Monday, January 16th, 2012
Topic: Conducting Risk Assessments in Psychology
Details: John has just been convicted of aggravated assault. What prison security level is most reasonable for him? George has almost served one third of his sentence for a series of home invasions. What advice should be given to the National Parole Board? These are the kinds of questions that face psychologists working in correctional settings. This talk will review some of the history, and some of the tools used, in Canadian correctional risk assessment.
Presenter: Dr. Peter Hoaken, Psychologist
Peter Hoaken graduated from Queen's University in 1993, and studied at McGill University under the supervision of Dr. Robert Pihl, earning his PhD in 2001. While a post-doc at Dalhousie Dr. Hoaken augmented his meager SSHRC dollars conducting risk assessments at Springhill Prison. He no longer conducts these assessments, but remains interested in the state of the clinical science. He's been a Faculty Member at UWO since 2003.
