CMHA-LM WAIT-LIST COUNSELLING & TRAINING CLINIC (WLC)

The mandate of this clinic is to address two broad goals:

    • to increase access to mental health services for members of the London, Ontario community who cannot otherwise access these services, and

    • to provide inter-disciplinary training in counselling skills to students from a wide range of health and mental health disciplines

It was also established from the outset that the WLC will neither duplicate, nor compete with, existing mental health services or training opportunities. In an ideal model, the WLC would be integrated within the local mental health and academic/training landscapes, complementing and supporting established institutions and agencies.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • The Wait-List Times:

    • Volume I, Issue I (September 2010; inaugural issue)

    • Volume II, Issue I (May 2011)
      • Almost another year has come and gone since you have heard from us and the work on the Wait List Clinic at Canadian Mental Health Association London Middlesex continues. We are in the process of applying for several grants this spring and moving forward with program development. Our project idea was very well-received at the CMHA national conference, Thriving in 2010 and Beyond, which was held in London in October of 2010. The Active Minds student group at the University of Western Ontario generously donated the proceeds from a Stand Up for Mental Health comedy night, wait list clinic merchandise continues to sell at a steady pace, and private donors have started to make contributions to the wait list clinic via Canadian Mental Health Association London Middlesex Branch. A new psychology resident from the London Clinical Psychology Residency Consortium is involved with the project, as is a recently psychology graduate. A London psychologist has volunteered to help with curriculum development. A wait list clinic enthusiast designed and produced our first video, which can be viewed here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ti3kgSOVStI Momentum is growing! We are always looking for assistance and welcome you to come forward if you have a special skill or talent to share with us or if you feel passionately about the wait list issue and are just itching to help. I also want to bring special attention to the Pepsi Refresh grant. We have been accepted in the next round of applications, so from May 1 to May 31, you can help the clinic by voting for our project EVERY DAY! The idea with the most votes wins and we’d love for that to be ours!! All Canadians can vote, so please feel free to distribute information about our project widely to insure that we get as many dedicated voters as possible! The website address is www.refresheverything.ca . We can be found in the $25000 competition as of May 1.

    • August 2011
      • A few months have come and gone since you have heard from us and the work on the Wait List Clinic at Canadian Mental Health Association London Middlesex Branch has continued. Attached please find the announcement about the funding of our pilot project!! We were successful this year in our application to the Green Shield Canada Community Giving Program! So, we are quickly moving forward with program development and implementation so that we can pilot the Wait List Clinic. We are hoping to have our doors open in January of 2012!

Also, please find a flyer [here] that can be broadly distributed to recruit students for the clinic, including volunteer counselors, security, and receptionists. Given that students will be returning to school shortly, I would appreciate if you might make your peers aware of this incredible opportunity for students as soon as possible.

We are also going to begin recruiting a couple of supervising psychologists. We are always looking for assistance and welcome you to come forward if you have a special skill or talent to share with us, if you feel passionately about the wait list issue, and/or if you are just itching to help. Thanks so much for your interest in our project. Please feel free to distribute our exciting update to others whom you think may have an interest. We also hope to be in touch in the next couple of months with an invitation to our open house.

Thank you again for your interest and assistance in making this project a success!
